Quick answer
An urgent business loan is any business funding arranged quickly to meet a genuine deadline, such as a supplier payment, wage run, tax notice or repair. Most are short unsecured loans assessed on bank statements or property-secured loans for larger amounts. Same-day funding is possible for some once the file is complete. Confirm the deadline is real before paying for speed.
Key points
- Check the deadline is real before paying for speed.
- Unsecured suits smaller urgent costs; property suits larger ones.

Urgent business loans are about deadlines. A supplier who won’t ship until Friday. A pay run on Thursday. A tax notice with a date on it. A tender that needs a deposit by close of business. The deadline is what makes the funding urgent, and the deadline is what should shape the loan.
Is it really urgent?
Before you pay for speed, ask one question: what happens if the money arrives a week later?
| If a week later means… | Then… |
|---|---|
| A lost contract or customer | Genuinely urgent; speed is worth paying for |
| The business can’t trade | Genuinely urgent |
| A serious penalty or enforcement | Urgent, but check alternatives such as a payment plan |
| Mild inconvenience | Probably not urgent; compare slower options |
| A deadline you set yourself | Not urgent; take the time to shop around |
Being honest here can save real money. Urgent funding is priced for urgency.
The two main routes
Unsecured. For smaller urgent amounts and a trading business with steady banking, an unsecured loan assessed on linked statements is usually quickest. Same-day funding is possible for smaller amounts once the file is complete.
Property-secured. For larger amounts, very tight deadlines, newer businesses or credit issues, a property-secured loan carries more weight. $20k to $250k is possible same day once title, value and signers are sorted, and up to $5m possible within 24–48 hours.
Fund the urgent part first
Often only part of the need is truly urgent. A business facing a $150,000 problem may need $40,000 by Friday and the rest over the next month. Funding the urgent slice quickly, then arranging the rest on better terms, is usually cheaper and simpler than one large urgent loan. Ask about it.
What to have ready
- The deadline and what happens if it’s missed.
- The invoice, notice or contract behind the need.
- Online banking ready to link.
- Photo ID for every director, all available to e-sign.
- For property: address, value, loan balance and owners.
Urgency is when mistakes happen
Most regrettable business loans are signed in a hurry. The pressure is real, but ten minutes can prevent months of pain. Before you sign:
- Know the total cost in dollars, including every fee.
- Check the repayment schedule. Daily, weekly or monthly, and what each payment is.
- Check early repayment. Can you repay when the money comes in without a big cost?
- Check the security. What property or guarantee are you giving?
- Check what happens if you’re late. Default fees and extension costs.

An illustrative example
A Darwin air-conditioning contractor wins an emergency hospital maintenance contract. The parts supplier needs $62,000 by Wednesday to air-freight compressors, and the contract pays in 30 days. The business has traded five years with clean banking. Rather than borrow a round $100,000 “to be safe”, the owner borrows the $62,000 plus freight, paid directly to the supplier, on a two-month term that ends after the contract payment. The parts arrive on time and the loan is repaid early. Illustrative only.
Who to tell inside the business
Urgent loans often stall on people, not paperwork. If your business has more than one director, tell the others as soon as you know funding is needed, because each will usually need to sign and provide ID. If property is involved, everyone on the title needs to know and agree. Getting those conversations started early, even before you’ve chosen a lender, removes the most common cause of a missed deadline.
When urgent means trouble
If you’re needing urgent funding most months, the problem isn’t speed; it’s cash flow. A cash flow loan, better payment terms or a look at pricing will do more than another urgent loan. And if the business is losing money, borrowing quickly can make things worse. Speak to your accountant or a free small business financial counsellor.
Questions to ask the lender
When you’re under pressure it helps to have the questions ready. Ask how long approval and settlement usually take for a file like yours, whether they can pay the supplier directly, what the total cost will be in dollars over the full term, whether there’s a cost to repay early, and what happens if repayment is a few days late. A lender who answers clearly and in writing is one you can work with. A lender who dodges these questions or pushes you to sign first is one to walk away from, however quick they promise to be.
Meet the deadline
Tell us what the deadline is, what’s behind it and how much you need. Asking doesn’t touch your credit file, your details aren’t sent to a dozen lenders, and one real person reads it and calls you. Answer accurately and we’ll focus on what can genuinely land in time. Start your enquiry here.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my need is really urgent?
Ask what happens if the money arrives a week later. If the answer is a lost contract, stalled business or serious penalty, it's urgent. If it's mild inconvenience, a slower, cheaper option may be better.
Can I get an urgent loan with bad credit?
Often with property security. Unsecured urgent loans with recent defaults are harder but possible with clean recent banking and a clear explanation.
What's the biggest mistake with urgent loans?
Borrowing too much, for too long, on terms you haven't read. Urgency pushes people to sign quickly. Ten minutes reading the contract is always worth it.
Can part of the need be funded first?
Often, yes. Funding the most urgent item now and the rest later can be quicker and cheaper than one large urgent loan.
